For President Hill, an underground and independent artist from Atlanta, March is already off to a great start. With his hit single—“You Feeling it Shawty,” off the album “The Elected Official”—in the Top 10 on independent charts for weeks now, his momentum is growing in the music world.
From the age of 12 President Hill began learning the craft of arranging bars from his cousin. By age 15, the artist, with help from his mother, had incorporated a record label and began buying professional studio equipment. As the years passed, President Hill continued honing his craft with a solid determination to succeed in the music industry.
On a typical day, President Hill can be found sifting through his music catalogue of unfinished songs, searching for the next big thing. He gets up early in order to go to the studio “when he’s fresh.” Yet sometimes the inspiration comes – not out of routine, but on the days when “you have a thirst and a hunger to get into the studio. That’s when you create something awesome. When the emotions line up with what you want to do.”
Fortunately for President Hill, his studio is right at home. In fact, he hasn’t worked beyond his own studio in 14 years, which allows him to do what he enjoys most—being alone while he writes. Then it’s off to record. “Once I lay (the song) down, I try not making mistakes. When I first lay down a sound, that inspires the voice. If I have to go back, then I have to perform that verse 20-30 times to match what I first put in, in order to get the sound like it was in my heart (the first time). It still sounds good, but in your heart you know how it sounded when you wrote it.”
President Hill’s dedication to his craft is so great that he isn’t afraid to try and try again. Since he was a teenager, the artist has been elevating his skills in order to create a sound uniquely his, entirely on his own. He doesn’t rely on outside producers to make the music that is true to who he is. One of the artist’s favorite parts of sharing his music is observing the reactions of his listeners; everyone gains different insight from his songs based off their own life experiences.
This upcoming year, we can look forward to a hot summer single from President Hill—one that is sure to inspire people to “go out and be free.” “We survived this long and we’re still here. Let’s have some fun,” says President Hill of life opening up again. He’s looking forward to connecting with people and sharing new music throughout the year.
At the end of the day, President Hill wants to remind us that his life work isn’t just another record label. “Purpose for a purpose. Unifying a nation within a nation. Music is just the entry point but it’s bigger than that.”
