Arvin, Elijah, Shyon, and Axel make up The Royaies, a new and versatile group from Toronto. Inspired by well-known Toronto-area artists including The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Roy Woods, The Royaies are determined to make a sound of their own. With diverse sounds from having grown up in different cultures and places, the group has always had a passion for music and the people who encouraged it.

There is nothing like the bond of family to keep you going when times are tough. “Princesa” was born from a dark moment and blossomed into a hit single for The Royaies. Based off a true story of love and loss, “Princesa” highlights the emotions of real life experiences. According to Arvin, “music is the best way to express emotions—what you’ve been through and what you’ve learned.” Undoubtedly, The Royaies have experienced life’s ups and downs yet found an outlet through which they could share life’s lessons with a captive audience.

The group—comprised of two sets of brothers who are cousins—don’t just rely on the strength of their bonds but also bring out the best in each other. Speaking for the group, Arvin hopes to connect to their audience on a deeper level. His love for writing is showcased across songs. He praises literary tools, stating that the tools of poetry allow him to rap at a deeper level. It’s the harmony of combining the two forms of art that inspires The Royaies to convey meaningful messages in a medium listeners are sure to enjoy.

When The Royaies come together to create music, they collaborate through a combination of group work and independent brainstorming sessions. After a break, they return with their own thoughts and come together for the chorus. The main ingredient of each session? Having fun. Music is their passion, and time flows freely when they’re in the zone.

While The Royaies are transitioning from day jobs and school to a budding music career, they wouldn’t have it any other way. “Keep grinding and don’t listen to anyone,” says Arvin of the self-doubt that plagued him in his youth. “In high school, I was always passionate about the music, but kept going back and forth with belief and trust. Now? My passion didn’t change—my trust changed.” And that trust has made all the difference.

In the next year, you can expect to see The Royaies performing in clubs, domestically and, later, internationally. The group plans to collaborate with different rappers from around the world. It’s not enough to be a “Toronto band”—this group is driven to become a global success. The Royaies take pride in the uniqueness and versatility of their music and can’t wait to share their upcoming album in 2022.
